The human brain suffers pretty steep penalties on a context switch.
…What?
What that means is, when we try to multitask, we actually do each task more slowly overall then if we had done each task one at a time. It’s important to focus, because if you do 5 things multitasking, contrary to many people’s belief, you spend more time per task overall, and you make substantially more mistakes. This is why it’s so dangerous to text or use the phone while driving, for example.
Besides the host of research (and the law), there’s also a simple concept behind it that is easy to grasp. If you do 3 things at once, and spend the same amount of time on them, then you’ll go for a longer time without getting ANYTHING done. But if you do them one at a time you’ll have the first two tasks done for longer, which can have substantial benefits, especially considering you won’t have part of your brainpower spent worrying about them.
This lesson was really important for me, because I was struggling to keep up with a number of things in my life. By shutting out fear, guilt that I was behind, and worry about other things, I was able to focus completely on one task at a time, and I found that the rate I could get tasks that had been giving me tons of trouble was incredible! All it takes is focusing your effort and attention.
To commemorate this lesson, I created the Focus Amulet Relic:
Wearing it reminds me to focus on what I’m doing, to help me achieve flow, and have an easier time getting to Wonderland. The amulet is hand crafted and painted, and if you’re interested in buying one, you can use the Contact Me form to get a hold of me, and I can hand make you your own, 100% unique focus amulet.
